Former senator Edgardo Angara has passed away due to an “apparent heart attack”.
Angara, who served as Senate President from 1993 to 1995, died at the age of 83. News of his death was announced by his son, Senator Sonny Angara on Twitter.
“Sad to say my father, former senator Edgardo Javier Angara, passed on from this life this morning at the age of 83, from an apparent heart attack,” Senator Sonny Angara said.
“We are still arranging funeral arrangements for my father but will keep everyone posted too. We ask for prayers for the repose of his soul,” he added in another tweet.
Angara served in the Senate for four terms. He was also the Agriculture chief during the Estrada administration from 1999 to 2000.
Last year, he was appointed special envoy to the European Union by President Rodrigo Duterte.
European Union (EU) Ambassador to the Philippines Franz Jessen expressed his mourning over the passing of former senate president Angara, whom he described as “a great patriot and a true friend of the EU.”
“I am saddened to hear that Senator Ed Angara, a statesman and a good friend, has passed away,” Jessen said in a statement.
“My thoughts and prayers are with his family,” he added.
