President Rodrigo Duterte handed over the Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) to Mislatel or Mindanao Islamic Telephone Co. in Malacañang, Monday.
Mislatel has also announced that it will be renaming itself as ‘DITO Telecommunity’.
The granting of CPCN paved the way for DITO formally start operating in the country as third telco player.
DITO is expected to break the duopoly between Smart Telecommunications and Globe Telecom.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said that DITO can start accepting subscribers in November this year.
“They will only go to a commercial operation pag wala nang problem sa network nila. Sa timeline nila that is 2020,” the DICT said.
DITO promised to provide a speed of 27 megabits per second (Mbps) internet service to 37% of the population on its first year of operation.
