The death of Dwight Ritchie yesterday came as a shock to the Australian boxing community.
His death was confirmed by his promoter Jake Ellis.
The 27-year-old boxer reportedly collapsed during a sparring, says a report by Sydney’s Daily Telegraph.
He took a body shot, walked back to his corner and collapsed, during a sparring in Melbourne with Michael Zerefa.
Ritchie was preparing for a match with Jeff Horn, a former WBO welterweight champion.
” As Dwight’s promoter and friend it’s unbearable to accept the tragic news that’s just surfaced. Dwight will always be remembered by the boxing fraternity as one of the brightest talents in Australia who’s fighting style embodied exactly how he lived. RIP Cowboy you’ll be forever missed,” Ellis wrote on his caption.
Ritchie held a record of 19-2. His last fight was in August. He lost to Tim Tszyu by a unanimous decision for the Australasian super welterweight title.
