First suspected case of bubonic plague surfaces in China

Authorities in China have issued immediate preventive measures and regulations following reports of the first suspected case of the bubonic plague in the inner city of Mongolia.
The municipal health commission in Bayannur announced a third-level warning for plague prevention and control which will be in place until the end of 2020, as per reports from Xinhua News Agency.

Local authorities also urged the public to practice social distancing and avoid direct contact, citing that the plague poses risks of local transmission between people. All residents have been advised not to hunt nor consume meat of animals that could cause plague infections.
The public is likewise urged to report sightings of dead marmots or animals and to contact authorities for suspected cases, patients with high fever for unknown reasons and sudden deaths.

The bubonic plague was the main cause of the historic ‘Black Death’ that took nearly 50 million lives during the Middle Ages, most of which took place in Europe. Symptoms of the plague include painful, swollen lymph nodes, accompanied by chills, coughing and fever.
