The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection around the world has now crossed 800,000, with more than 38,000 deaths.
Maryland-based John Hopkins University, which keeps track of official statistics, reported 801,400 confirmed cases and 38,743 deaths as of 1230H GMT.
The United States is still the worst-affected country with 164,610 cases — now double the cases in China.
The death toll in the US, now at 3,710, has now exceeded that from the September 11 terrorist attacks. With 1 million people in the US tested, the mortality rate is at 1.9%.
However, it is Spain which reported the highest single-day death toll since the start of the pandemic, 849 today, bringing the total number of fatalities in the European country to 8,189.
Worldwide, the number of recovered patients is increasing. John Hopkins tally records it at 172,657. This means, almost 2 in every 8 persons who got infected are already out of the woods.
