‘Highly pathogenic’ H5N8 bird flu virus outbreak reported in Germany

A total of 44 birds out of a flock of 69 were killed in Bretzfeld, in a backyard in the southwestern part of Germany due to a reported outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N8 bird flu virus.
According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) citing a report from Germany’s food and agriculture ministry, the outbreak was in Bretzfeld, in the Baden-Wurttemberg region.

As of Feb. 7, OIE said all poultry and captive birds were culled and safely disposed in an OIE report quoted by Reuters.
It also said that no poultry, poultry-products or captive birds have been dispatched.
The case of this bird flu virus was first confirmed in a wild bird last January.
However, no birds on farms were involved at that time.
