8 illegal Pinoy workers repatriated from Iraq

Eight Filipino workers who were illegally recruited to work in Iraq have been repatriated by the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad.

The Embassy posted on Facebook a photo of the Filipino workers at the airport on Christmas Day.

“The Philippine Embassy in Iraq repatriated 8 [trafficking in persons] victims to join their families this holiday season,” it said in its post.

The Embassy did not identify the victims and pixelized their faces.

The workers wrote a letter expressing their gratitude for the help extended to them by the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad.

The Embassy has been actively campaigning on social media against human trafficking. Many of the human trafficking victims were told they would be working in Dubai, only to be diverted to Iraq as domestic helpers.

Aside from Dubai, other workers who ended up in Iraq transited from Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok as tourists.
