An Emirati is on trial in Ras Al Khaimah on charges of insulting a former Federal National Council (FNC) member on social media networks.
The unnamed FNC member filed a lawsuit against the Emirati accusing him of “publishing offending and obscene words” against him in response to his advice to citizens about the election of new FNC members last month.
The Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm said the defendant admitted he made critical comments online but denied he meant that FNC member.
“The defendant denied the accusations on the grounds he made general critical comments and did not single out any FNC member,” the paper said, adding that the judge would issue a sentence this week.
