Last known female Sumatran rhino dies in Malaysia

The last known species of the Sumatran rhino recently died of cancer which has made their species extinct.

In a report by the Daily Mail quoting The Wildlife Department in eastern Sabah state on Borneo island, the 25-year-old rhino named Iman died on Saturday at 5:35 pm local time (9:35pm GMT).

She suffered significant pain from growing pressure of the uterine tumours to her bladder.

She was diagnosed with tumours since being captured back in March 2014.

Her death comes six months after the country’s only male rhino in Sabah also died.

The death of Iman, according to Department director Augustine Tuuga, came sooner that they expected.

Wildlife officials were able to nurse her back to health before and were able to obtain her egg cells too. This would be their move to reproduce the critically endangered species through artificial insemination.

The World Wildlife Fund estimates there are only 80 rhinos left with the majority living in the wild in Sumatra and Borneo.

The Sumatra rhino is the smallest of the species and the only one to have two horns.
