Supreme Court allows Mary Jane Veloso to testify on her case

The Supreme Court has decided to allow Mary Jane Veloso to testify on her human trafficking case via desposition on Friday.

“The Supreme Court has allowed the taking of the testimony of convicted drug trafficker Mary Jane Veloso against her recruiters by way of deposition in Indonesia,” the SC’s Public Information Office said in a statement.

Veloso will now be given the chance to tell her story against her illegal recruiters Maria Christina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao.

Both suspects were charged of human trafficking cases for tricking Veloso to carry a luggage with illegal drugs on it.

“The Court said that to disallow the written interrogatories will curtail Mary Jane’s right to due process,” the High Court said.

“Her imprisonment in Indonesia and the conditions attached to her reprieve denied her of any opportunity to decide for herself to voluntarily appear and testify before the trial court in Nueva Ecija where the cases of the respondents of illegal recruitment were pending,” it added.

Veloso’s written testimony will be obtained by Philippine Consular Officers in Indonesia.

Her lawyers hope that this could pave the way on removing Veloso from Indonesia’s death row.
