Nancy Binay on anti-discrimination bill: Do I need a bill like SOGIE because of my skin color?

Senator Nancy Binay appealed to lawmakers to push for an anti-discrimination bill that would protect everyone and not just a particular group.

Binay, who has been a constant subject of memes because of her ‘dark skin’ color, is asked in the Senate hearing on the Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) if she also needs a bill to protect her.

“I mean for example ako, I’ve been discriminated because of my color. Does that mean that I need to file a bill to protect people like me?” Binay asked.

The senator hopes that the proposed anti-discrimination measure would be more encompassing.

“So sana ‘yung discussion natin when it comes to discrimination should be more universal, should be more encompassing,” Binay said.

Meanwhile, Senator Risa Hontiveros argued that there is still a need to have SOGIE bill just like the Magna Carta for Women.
