HK consul to Pinoys: Don’t join pro-democracy rallies

Business operations in Hong Kong is now back to normal after violent and massive protests erupted in the country’s central business this week.

Protesters had stormed Hong Kong legislative complex to protest a controversial extradition bill.

The Philippine Consul General in Hong Kong Antonio Morales said that Filipinos should continue taking safety measures even though protests had already ended.

Morales advised Filipinos to stay away from common protest areas to avoid inconvenience should another protest take place.

“Walang protesta sa mga panahong ito pero inaasahan natin sa mga susunod na araw magkakaroon,” Morales said in an interview with GMA News.

He also said Filipinos who were used to gather in the Central Park on Sundays were told by their employers to reschedule their day off last July 1 during the handover anniversary rally.

“Yung iba sa Kowloon area na lang nag day off,” he said.

Morales added that they have reports of some Filipinos joining the protests which is considered illegal in Hong Kong. Several Filipino workers have even posted photos in their Facebook accounts.

“Paalala sa mga kababayan may ibang nababalita may ibang kababayan nakikisali sa rally, maaari tayong mabigyan ng warning ng immigration or ma cancel ang visa pag makita nakikisali kayo sa mga rally,” Morales warned.

There are at least 234,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWS) in the Chinese territory, majority of them are domestic helpers.
