Apple iTunes to be phased out

iTunes, the groundbreaking music platform that was launched in 2001, will be shutting down in favor of three more tailored apps.

Apple announced at the WWDC 2019 that iTunes will be phased out with the introduction of the new version of MacOS, Catalina.

Three new apps, namely Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Podcasts, will be taking over iTunes existing functionality.

“The future of iTunes is not one app, it’s three,” Apple senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi said.

Ever since it launched, iTunes became one of the top software when it comes to streaming music, videos, and more from the internet cloud.

“There is no reason for iTunes to exist, period,” said Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi.

“If I want music, I have the app. If I want TV, I have the app. That is how people are thinking about today.”

Aside from the three new apps, Apple will also be launching an eponymous TV+ later this year.

However, it is not yet clear what will happen to the iTunes version in Windows-powered computers.

Software innovations and improvements revealed at the opening day of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) touched the company’s entire line-up from wrist-wear to iPhones and Car Play along with smart assistant Siri.

Apple is aiming to leverage its position with about 900 million people worldwide who use at least one of its devices.
