Sand snake captured in a Bahrain neighborhood

A Bahraini man has caught a desert snake in one of the neighborhoods in Riffa, Bahrain’s second largest city.

According to reports, the man captured the snake without causing any injury and handed it over to the Bahrain Welfare Society.

Mahmood Faraj, president of the society, the captured snake is the Arabian sand snake or the Eryx jayakari.

He stated that the presence of the snake in the neighborhood is rare. “It’s very much uncommon to see this snake roaming in the neighborhoods because it prefers to bury itself under sand in the morning and leaves at night to hunt its preys such as lizards and mice,” Faraj told News of Bahrain.

After getting hold of the snake, the society immediately contacted the Supreme Council for Environment, an agency tasked to protect Bahrain’s environment and natural resources, and was consulted by the society before releasing the snake to the Al Areen Wildlife.

Growing to a total length of approximately 15 inches, the Arabian sand snake is yellowish-grey or sandy-brown in color with white speckles and dark marks.
