The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will provide live scan fingerprint verification system in all polling precincts in 2019 midterm elections, said commission spokesperson James Jimenez.
With the use of live scan fingerprint verification system, it will be easier to determine if the voter is registered in the particular polling precinct he went to, reported Philippine Star.
Each registered voter has his biometrics information uploaded on the Comelec database. This includes the voter’s photo, signature, and fingerprints.
As photos and signatures go to the computerized voters list, fingerprints will be uploaded to a separate “automated fingerprint identification system” (AFIS).
“If you have another set of fingerprints in the system you will be flagged and you will be removed,” Jimenez said.
Comelec expects that the new layer of verification system will make the elections next year more systematic and will reduce long queues in the precincts.
Jimenez also said the initiative was part of the poll body’s efforts against “flying voters” or those who attempt to vote in more than one precinct.
