Intelligent street lights now on test phase in Dubai

Motorists in the UAE are about to experience a new level of technology on the road as intelligent street lights in Dubai will soon be installed.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that it has launched a new project using intelligent lighting system at Jumeirah Corniche, reported Gulf News.

These street lights will adapt to the movement of motorists, as they can go brighter when needed or turn dimmer when the streets are not in use based on provisional street readings by the RTA.

Through LED technology, the street light system will also save energy by 80 percent compared to the power consumed by conventional lighting system.

“The system uses specialized sensors that monitor the movement on the road and controls the light intensity. It communicates and sets the nearby lighting poles ready for the passage of road users. Thus, it contributes to power saving and at the same time ensures a safe lighting level for pedestrians and road users,” explained Engineer Maitha Mohammad bin Adai, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency.
