LOOK: Driverless vehicle tested in Dubai

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Wednesday, September 5, launched the fourth phase of the Driverless Vehicles Project in Sustainable City, Dubailand.

Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency and Chairman of Smart and Sustainable Transport Committee, said that the ‘driverless vehicle’ can accommodate up to eight passengers and runs on pre-programmed routes which can also be altered depending on the demand.

The vehicle runs at a speed of 20 km/h and is designed to travel on closed internal streets, such as those within residential communities and entertainment venues. In terms of safety, the vehicle has GPS monitors which allows it to detect its route.

The vehicle can also detect any object within 40 meters, and slow down automatically when an object appears within two meters. The vehicle comes to a complete stop when the object approaches less than two meters.

Bahrozyan added that the ‘driverless vehicles’ are environment-friendly compared to other transport means that contribute to global warming due to their gas emissions.

“The introduction of driverless vehicles in Sustainable City is a future step towards using the smartest public transport means. It supports Dubai’s Smart City initiative and the Government’s strategy for driverless mobility, which will pave the way for more sustainable solutions in this regard,” said Faris Saeed, CEO of Diamond Developers Company.
