The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) confirmed that family of slain overseas Filipina worker (OFW) Joanna Demafelis is being given psychosocial counseling to help them cope with the OFW’s tragic death.
DSWD-FO VI director Rebecca Geamala said that the results they obtained from the counseling would help identify additional interventions and other social protection programs for the Demafelis family.
Demafelis’ parents were also received medical consultation from the municipality’s Rural Health Unit, free of charge.
Aside from the psychosocial assistance, financial assistance has also been extended by the Philippine government toward Demafelis’ family.
The Demafelis family previously received P500,000 worth of financial and educational assistance from President Rodrigo Duterte when he visited Joanna’s wake.
The family is also receiving financial help through the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program and Social Pension Program.
Moreover, a recommendation for the family to be included in the DSWD’s Sustainable Livelihood Program and to receive medical assistance through the AICS program is currently being processed.
The body of Joanna Demafelis was discovered stuffed inside a freezer at an abandoned apartment in Kuwait. Her employers are currently in the custody of Lebanon and Syria and will face death by hanging if proven guilty.
Demafelis’ remains were buried in her hometown in Sara, Iloilo on Saturday, March 3.
