OFW caregiver shot dead by drunk policeman in La Union

A Saudi-based overseas Filipino worker (OFW) was gunned down on September 10 in Pugo, La Union by a drunk policeman for parking in front of the officer’s house.

Samson Eloja, 33, was declared dead-on-arrival at the La Union Medical Center in Agoo town after suffering from several gunshots in Tavora East Village.

Information officer Chief Insp. Silverio Ordinado of La Union Police Provincial Office (LUPPO) identified the suspect as 35-year-old Police Officer 1 Francis Michael Laranang. Laranang was assigned to Pugo police office’s general services section.

According to the investigation, Eloja went to Tavora East in his Ford Escape when he parked in front of Laranang’s house.

Laranang, who was drunk at that time, got irritated and confronted the victim. Eloja then transferred his car to a basketball court nearby.

Despite this, Laranang still went after Eloja and shot him with his 9mm service firearm.

Eloja’s mother Tessie said her son went to Tavora East to visit a friend.

In a radio interview, Ordinado said Laranang was transferred to LUPPO on August 29 after he was previously assigned at the Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office.

He also said the suspect was allegedly involved in a shooting incident in 2013 but was settled for a P300,000 pay-off.

Laranang is currently under custody of the Pugo Municipal Police Station as the filing of administrative and murder charges against him is still pending.

Eloja was set to go to Australia as a caregiver.
