The UAE Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has issued a warning to residents and restaurants in the UAE prohibiting the use and purchase of a Japanese-made soy sauce brand after some of its products were detected of having alcohol content.
After undergoing laboratory testing, several products of Kikkoman soy sauce were found to have a “high alcohol percentage more than the permissible limit according to the UAE and GCC specifications,” the Ministry said on Tuesday.
The ministry clarifies that the ban targets only the Kikkoman products made in Japan and does not include products made from its production plants in the US, Netherlands, China, Canada, Singapore, and Taiwan.
“The ministry works in continued coordination with the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of all imported and traded food products,” they added.
According to its website, Kikkoman soy sauce contains approximately 1.5%-2% alcohol by volume as a result of the fermentation process.
