Dubai’s pilotless air taxis ready for take off

The world’s first automated aerial taxis (AAT) is set to debut by the end of the year, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Sunday.

The German-designed Volocopter is in line with Dubai’s plan to make at least one of the main mass transits of the emirate driverless by 2020.

A video posted on Twitter by Dubai Media Police shows how would it be like to travel in the aircraft that can take off without the need for a pilot and a runway. Powered by 18 electric rotors, the AAT can transport passengers from one part of the city to the other in no time.

The two-passenger flying taxi also has fail-safe features including nine separate electrical power systems and a parachute that will allow the aircraft to land safely on the ground.
