Dubai Customs’ inspectors impeded a European passenger’s attempt to allegedly smuggle Dh3 million worth of luxury wristwatches and jewelry.
The inspectors at Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3 retrieved 76 luxury wristwatches, 6 pieces of diamond-studded jewelry strapped around the suspected smuggler’s body.
Customs authority became suspicious of the man’s behavior and found out that he was concealing the items underneath his clothes after he was x-rayed with a full-body scanner.
Ibrahim Kamali, Director of Passenger Operations at Dubai Customs, said smugglers have no chance of illegally bringing goods into the emirate because Dubai airports are equipped with scanning technology.
“The seizure is a case of smuggling and duty evasion which our inspectors are always vigilant and adept to abort so as to protect customs revenues and Dubai’s economy,” Kamali said in a statement.
“Dubai airports are equipped with highly developed scanning technology that detect any objects in people’s bodies,” he added.
Dubai Customs has forwarded the case to relevant authorities to take legal actions.
