The man who attacked the Resorts World Manila (RWM) and set its casino on fire before killing himself on Friday was a former employee at the Department of Finance (DOF), the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said on Sunday.
The name of the gunman is Jessie Javier Carlos, who was assigned at the DOF’s One Stop Shop, NCRPO Director Oscar Albayalde said in a press briefing.
Albayalde also said the attack that left 38 people dead, including Carlos, was a robbery attempt and not a terrorist attack.
“…this incident is confined to the act of one man alone…,” the Inquirer quoted Albayalde as saying.
Carlos’ family confirmed the gunman’s identity to authorities early Sunday.
Jessie’s father denied that his son was deranged, as described by officials.
According to the report, the 42-year-old Carlos was fired from his job for misdeclaring his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth.
Albayalde said Carlos was previously banned from casinos by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation and he had a P4 million (Dh297,587) debt.
After shooting at a TV screen inside the casino area of the RWM and setting gambling tables on fire, Carlos went upstairs and locked himself in a hotel room. He then set himself on fire and shot himself.
