At least 1,000 people were injured in a stampede of football fans watching the Champions League football final on a large screen in the Piazza San Carlo square here late Saturday.
Firecrackers that went off to celebrate the third goal of Real Madrid star player Cristiano Ronaldo against rival Juventus was mistaken as a bomb explosion and triggered the stampede.
Other reports suggest that the stampede was triggered by the fall of a metal gate on the pavement.
Many were treated for bruises and cuts but 10 people are in serious condition, according to local Corriere TV.
Almost 20,000 people were watching the game when the stampede occured.
Real Madrid went on to beat Juventus 4:1 disappointing the Italian club’s fans. (PNA)
