Filipinos in Baghdad urged to avoid public places

MANILA: Filipinos in Baghdad were warned to avoid public places and to remain vigilant after two bombings shattered a shopping area and a popular market in the Iraqi capital that left more than 120 people dead.

Iraq Charge D’ Affaires Elmer Cato said similar bombings are expected in Baghdad ahead of a holiday marking the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan, reported ABS-CBN News.
“More such attacks are expected not just in Baghdad but in other places in Iraq as well as the end of Ramadan draws near. May we again remind our kababayans in Iraq to remain vigilant especially in the coming days,” Cato said in a statement.

He urged them to restrict their movement and avoid going to public places.
He also encouraged them to keep in touch with the embassy.

Iraqi forces last month dislodged Islamic State militants from Falluja, their stronghold just west of the capital that served as a launch pad for such attacks, the report said.
About 10,000 Filipinos live and work in Iraq despite the deployment ban to the war torn country since 2007.
