Veteran broadcast journalist Jessica Soho, known for covering dangerous assignments including a detonated mine in Afghanistan, shared that her greatest fear is not the hazards of reporting, but the country’s persistent political and economic problems.
Speaking at the press conference for KMJS’ Gabi ng Lagim The Movie, Soho said the nation’s “downward spiral” of corruption and recurring crises continues to threaten ordinary Filipinos.
“’Yung nabanggit ko kanina ‘yung downward spiral, ‘yung magtuloy-tuloy ‘tong masamang sitwasyon sa ating lipunan. ‘Yung hindi tayo makahon, nakakatakot,” Soho said.
“Sila ‘yung mga korakot okay na sila, they can leave anytime. Ang dami na nilang nakurakot na yaman. Paano naman tayo? ‘Yung mga araw-araw nagsusumikap mabuhay para sa ating bansa,” she added.
Her remarks come amid fresh scrutiny over the government’s multi-trillion peso flood control anomalies.
Soho, whose eponymous program on GMA is debuting in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) with the horror anthology, lamented that she has been reporting on the same corruption and economic problems since the 1980s.
“So nakita na natin ’to noong 1980s… Nasurvive naman natin pero sana huwag na magkaroon ng round two, tama na,” she said.
