A Florida jury has granted $800,000 (approximately 2.9 million dirhams) in damages to a 7-year-old girl, Olivia Caraballo, who suffered a second-degree burn after a Chicken McNugget fell on her thigh during a visit to a McDonald’s at the age of 4.
The verdict was reached in Broward County, and the damages were awarded for the pain, suffering, and mental anguish experienced by Olivia.
The lawsuit against McDonald’s and Upchurch Foods, the franchise operator, highlighted the absence of adequate instructions or warnings about potential injury risks from consuming a Chicken McNuggets meal.
The jury’s decision was seen as a significant victory for the family, bringing closure to the legal battle that commenced in 2019.
While McDonald’s lawyers have yet to comment on any potential appeals, Olivia’s lead counsel expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the damages granted far exceeded McDonald’s proposed amount.
The incident draws parallels to a famous past lawsuit involving hot coffee against the fast-food giant.
