Mactan Cebu International Airport opens for limited time following Korean Air incident

The Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has opened but only for a limited time after a Korean Air plane overshot the runway on Sunday midnight.

MCIA will only be opened on daytime while clearing operations are underway.

The runway will only be open from 5AM to 5PM according to airport authorities. This will last for 14 days.

There will be no night flights until the runway is cleared and lights have been replaced.

Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) Assistant General Manager Atty. Glenn Napuli resumed flight operations as early as Monday morning.

“The incident has necessitated the temporary closure of the MCIA to allow for the safe removal of the aircraft. For now, all international and domestic flights to and from MCIA are canceled until further notice,” MCIA said.

Some flights have also been diverted due to the incident.

Korean Air President Woo Gi Hong has apologized after one of their planes overshot the runway.

“First of all, I bow my head and apologize to everyone who saves Korean Air,” Woo said in a statement.

Flight KE631 which was scheduled to depart from Incheon Airport on October 23 and to arrive at Mactan Cebu Airport.

“Fortunately, it has been confirmed that there were no casualties, but my deepest condolences to the passengers and their families,” Woo added.

The airline said that they are doing its best to ensure that passengers are safe and comfortable without any inconvenience.

“We will make all efforts to ensure the situation is resolved as early as possible in cooperation with the Auler Local Aviation Authority and Government Authorities,” Woo added.

“Once again my sincere apologies,” Woo continued.
