Man sentenced to jail in immigration visa social media scam

An expat was sentenced to two months in jail after promising clients assistance in getting immigration permits to Europe or America.

The 43-year-old advertised aggressively with displays on building entrances as well as across social media sites, targeting individuals in the UAE who wish to immigrate to other countries.

Court records state that the man interviewed several victims at his company’s headquarters, and received money for his services. The man even issued receipts with the company’s logo to his clients.

A letter from the Department of Economic Development, revealed that the firm was not licensed to hand out visas. Authorities state that the man’s license is registered to only provide tourist guide services. This particular license does not allow the issuance of either tourist or immigration visas.

The accused denied all charges, stating that he was just an employee of the company. However, the court stated that the accused collected the money from his victims through such fraudulent means.

Authorities ordered the 43-year-old to pay back the money he took from his victims as visa transaction fees. The man will also be deported from the country, after serving his sentence.
