South Korea braces for impact of Super Typhoon ‘Hinnamnor’

South Korea issued weather advisories and increased its typhoon alert level on September 5 with typhoon Hinnamnor approaching and the southern regions of the nation already being battered by heavy rain and high winds,

After making landfall 90 kilometers southwest of the port city of Busan early on Tuesday, the typhoon, which is moving toward the north at a pace of 19 km/h (12 mph), is anticipated to have made landfall in the seas near Jeju Island around Monday midnight.

“Very strong winds and heavy rains are expected across the country through to Tuesday due to the typhoon, while there will be places where very high waves cross breakwaters and coastal roads along with storm and tsunami,” according to the latest bulletin from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

Following the southern island of Jeju, warnings have been issued for all of the southern cities, including Gwangju, Busan, Daegu, and Ulsan. On Sunday, the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters raised its emergency response posture for typhoons to the highest level for the first time in five years.

Rain fell on the port city and its surrounding region throughout weekend, and more rain is expected on Monday and Tuesday.

President Yoon Suk-yeol met with the authorities on Sunday to examine the response mechanism and pledged to make every effort to reduce storm damage.
