KNOW THE LAW: Up to AED 200,000 fine for fake emails, websites or online accounts

Creating fake e-mails, websites or online accounts in UAE would land a person in jail with fines that may reach up to AED 200,000.

The UAE Public Prosecution informed about the penalties of creating fake e-mails, websites and online accounts through its social media platforms.

The video referred to Article (11) of the Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on combatting rumours and cybercrimes that says any person who creates a fake website, online account or e-mail with the purpose of impersonation shall be imprisoned and fined not less than AED 50,000 and more than AED 200,000 or one of the two penalties.

The Public Prosecution said the offender shall be imprisoned for a minimum of two years for using the fake website, online account or e-mail to harm the impersonated victim.

Imprisonment of not more than five years, and a fine of not less than AED 200,000 and more than AED 2,000,000 will be imposed in case the fake website, online account or e-mail impersonates any UAE entity.
