A Catholic nun in Los Angeles was jailed after she was found guilty of funding her gambling habit by stealing worth $800,000 from a school that she managed, according to an AFP report.
The nun was sentenced to one-year imprisonment.
Mary Margaret Kreuper, 80, was a principal of a Roman Catholic School in Los Angeles. She was found guilty of stealing around $835,000 of school funds for her gambling habit in Las Vegas.
The nun was also accused of using the money for her luxury trips in resorts.
“I have sinned, I have broken the law, and I have no excuses,” Kreuper told the court, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Kreuper also admitted how the money sent for tuition and donations were wired to secret bank accounts that she controlled.
An audit report discovered the fraud and Kreuper told her staff to burn all the incriminating documents against her.
