Senator Win Gatchalian is set to file a bill proposing for a tandem vote for president and vice president in future elections.
Gatchalian wants the legislation to avoid the disagreement between the two top officials.
The senator said that the idea of a tandem vote is also being practiced in the United States, where the president and vice president come from the same political party.
“In voting for the president, his or her chosen running mate for vice president should be taken into consideration by the electorate,” Gatchalian said in a statement.
“First, it would be desirable to have a president and vice president have similar platforms to keep the administration solid and running. Second, if they are allies, and something happens to the president, the vice president will be able to continue what their predecessor started,” Gatchalian added.
Gatchalian said that this measure would also encourage voters to vote based on platforms and not personality.
The reelectionist senator said that he wants to make an amendment rather than proposing to overhaul the constitution.
