Sharjah suspends admissions for new students across nurseries due to COVID-19

New admissions in the nursery classes have been suspended in Sharjah schools on account of COVID-19.

Authorities have announced that while government nurseries in Sharjah will not admit new students when schools reopen for physical learning in the new academic year in September others will reopen for in-class lessons for only those previously enrolled.

According to the Sharjah Education Council, the measure has been taken to protect the health of children from COVID-19 and September will be devoted to “revitalising activities” and “actual learning” will begin in October.

The restrictions are to reduce the number of pupils in classes and to limit the number of children enrolled in schools during the first semester. The new pupils can only be admitted if authorities raise the capacity of students accepted in a class.

Secretary-General of the Sharjah Education Council, Mohammed Ahmed Al Mulla, said the administrative staff in schools had started work since August 15 to ensure that all safety and health requirements are in place.

According to Mariam Jaber Al Shamsi, Director of the Early Childhood Department at the Sharjah Education Council, the nursery programme will start with the “Fun September” events including workshops to prepare kids to get familiar with the school routine as they have spent long periods at home due to COVID-19.

Children will be grouped into two classes, including the care section, which targets children from the age of 3 months to two years, and the education section, which includes children from the age of two years till kindergarten. (AW)
