A 14-day-old infant has died from COVID-19 in Iloilo.
The young fatality has been confirmed by Igbaras town Mayor Jaime Esmeralda on his Facebook account on Saturday.
“As a matter of protocol, the boy was swabbed Friday night (Aug. 13), after he was pronounced dead at the Rep. Pedro Trono Memorial Hospital in Guimbal town. The result came out the following day,” Esmeralda said.
The baby was born on July 30 and the mother had normal delivery for the infant. She was told to comply with the 14-day mandatory isolation rules after she was discharged.
There was nothing unusual with the boy when her mother brought him for a hospital check-up after 8 days.
At the Rural Health Unit of Igbaras, the baby was immunized with anti-tuberculosis (BCG) vaccine on Aug. 10.
The mother however noticed that night that there were swelling rashes at the baby’s injection site.
With the baby having difficulty of breathing and getting bluish, she brought him back to the RHU the next day.
They called on an ambulance and rushed the baby to the hospital, but he was dead on arrival.
“For now, we can’t say where the child contracted the virus,” Esmeralda said.
