Thousands of residents have been forced to flee their homes in the floods caused by monsoon rains in the Philippines.
The evacuation efforts have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which made it difficult to enforce social distancing at the temporary shelters.
During the floods, a resident died Friday after a tree fell down on a taxi he was riding in.
Authorities evacuated people overnight from Marikina, a city of 15,000 people, amid the shortage of staying arrangements for a vast number of residents.
Marikina Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said that the “situation will be too difficult if there won’t be a permanent solution to flooding.”
He said that the difficulties have increased “especially now with the threat from the delta variant” of COVID-19. (AW)
