KNOW THE LAW: Up to 10 years jail time, AED 1 million fine for leaving children unattended in locked cars

Leaving children unattended in locked vehicles may put you behind bars for 10 years coupled with fines up to AED1 million, the Abu Dhabi Police warned.

Police said leaving children inside locked vehicles while guardians or parents go somewhere else could lead expose them to accidents or worse, death.

The force said such negligence is a punishable crime under UAE’s Child Rights Law – or Wadeema’s Law.

Article 33 and 34 of Child Rights Law guarantees protection of the rights of children with an emphasis on their mental and physical health.

Furthermore, the summer season can lead to serious dangers for a child unwittingly left inside closed vehicles such as heat stroke and suffocation.

Experts said a child locked inside a vehicle under direct sunlight could die in less than 10 minutes as temperatures can soar up to 60 degrees.

Abu Police have urged the parents and guardians not to leave their children alone and don’t let them play inside a car.
