US President Joe Biden pledges to be a president for “all Americans”

US President Joe Biden promises to become the president for all Americans, even for those who did not support him.

In his inaugural address, Biden pointed out the importance of unifying the country, adding that he is putting “his whole soul in this.”

“Today, on this January day, my whole soul is in this: Bringing America together, uniting our people, uniting our nation,” he said.

He recognized the divisiveness in US history, but he also assured that unity has always won out.

“I know the forces that divide us are deep and they are real. But I also know they are not new. Our history has been a constant struggle between the American ideal that we are all created equal, and the harsh, ugly reality that racism, nativism, fear, demonization have long torn us apart,” Biden said.

He thanked those who have supported him during the campaign.

He also asked those who did not support him to hear him out as the country moves forward.

“Take a measure of me and my heart. If you still disagree, so be it. That’s democracy. That’s America. The right to dissent peaceably within the guardrails of our republic is perhaps this nation’s greatest strength. Yet hear me clearly. Disagreement must not lead to disunion. And I pledge this to you. I will be a president for all Americans. All Americans. And I promise you, I will fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did.”

The US leader, before ending his inaugural address, asked for a moment of silence to pray for the 400,000 Americans who perished due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Overcoming all of this, Biden emphasized, can happen when there is unity.

Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States at 11:49 AM on Wednesday (early Thursday morning, PH Time). (ES)
