The Kuwait Foreign Ministry has announced that Saudi Arabia has reopened its land and air borders with Qatar as of Monday evening, January 4.
“An agreement has been reached to open airspace and land and sea borders between Saudi Arabia and Qatar as of this evening,” said Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Ahmad Nasser Al Sabah on Kuwait TV prior to the ongoing GCC Summit.
Kuwait’s foreign minister said a declaration would be signed at the summit that will be attended by Qatar’s Ruler Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani along with other GCC leaders.
Reports from Reuters further that an official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that this move is a ‘breakthrough’ in the rift among the countries within the Gulf Cooperation Council.
“At the signing on the 5th, leadership from the GCC plus Egypt will be coming together to sign an agreement that will end the blockade. It’s just a massive breakthrough. It will allow for travel amongst the countries as well as goods. It will lead to more stability in the region,” said the official.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt began the Qatar boycott in mid-2017 on allegations of terrorism.
