A Dubai maid, who was rushed to a hospital and later on died, was found to have been tortured by her sponsor who initially claimed that she fell on the floor of their bathroom.
The maid was only identified by the police as an Asian maid. No further information about her identity was disclosed.
Brigadier Jamal Al Jallaf, Director of the Dubai Police Department of Criminal Investigations, said the Arab sponsor was the one who took the maid to a private hospital in Dubai.
However, the hospital suspected a foul play and alerted Dubai Police, according to a Gulf News report. The authorities then discovered that the maid had died as a result of a physical assault by the sponsor.
They also found that the poor maid had suffered extreme weight loss. She only weighed 77 pounds (35kg) as a result of possibly weeks of torture.

“The sponsor initially said he did not know the reason for the maid’s death. There were signs of torture on her body, and her weight was only 35 kg,” Brigadier Al Jallaf said.
When pressed by investigators, the Arab sponsor’s wife admitted that her husband had struck the victim with a heavy object on the chest. Before this, she said her husband would sometimes put out his lit cigarette on the body of the victim.
The man was reportedly laid off from his job and was suffering from a mental problem. This resulted in frequent fight with the maid.
The case has been referred to public prosecution while Dubai Police coordinated with the consulate for the maid’s burial.
