Around 3,000 Chinese nationals have been deported from the Philippines in the last 10 months of 2020, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
The BI said the Chinese nationals were deported on the grounds of violating their visa conditions.
“A total of 2,736 Chinese nationals were given orders to leave after they were granted visas upon arrival (VUA) but failed to leave on their scheduled departure date,” BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said in a statement.
They were granted visas from January to October 2020 upon their arrival in the country, but they failed to leave on their scheduled departure date.
VUA holders are not allowed to stay in the Philippines beyond 30 days.
“While some were unable to leave due to circumstance, following the cancellation of many flights due to the pandemic, those who stayed without sufficient basis were included in our blacklist,” Morente said.
The Immigration Bureau has suspended the issuance of the visa upon arrival to slow the influx of Chinese nationals in the country.
