A Filipina businesswoman aims to showcase some of the Philippines’ finest handicrafts – the ‘Bayongs’ woven out from local materials by Filipino weavers.

April Moran, a Bicol-native who is now based in Canada, mentioned that her advocacy for the business is to extend some help to her kababayans back home in the Philippines through her business, “Bayong Canada” where she offers original bayongs, handbags, and clutch bags that are all made in the Philippines.

“My goal is to go global kasi ‘yong products natin, it is very competitive, kumbaga, the quality. And gusto kong ipakita sa lahat ‘yong galing ng mga Pilipino,” Moran said during ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo on Sunday.

“We’re not only supporting the kabuhayan of our kababayan here, binubuhay din natin ang kultura natin as Filipinos,” she added.

It was just February this year when Bayong Canada first gained attention after being featured on a Times Square billboard in New York City during the New York Fashion week.

According to Moran, she is most involved in making the bags’ designs, sending it to the weavers in the Philippines afterwards. The finished goods are then shipped to Canada.

Moran claimed that Bayong Canada caters to all ages, including millennials.

She also shared that 90% of her customers are OFWs, while the rest are foreigners.

Moran is set to open Bayong Canada’s first physical store in Calgary, while also in the process of opening an office in Taguig City, Philippines, to sell her bags to Filipinos at cheaper prices compared to the other luxury brands out there.
