UAE winter starts on December 21! Expect longer nights and shorter days

The wintertime in the UAE this year is set to begin on December 21, Monday, according to Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences (AUASS).

Al Jarwan said the cold season will kickstart in the afternoon of this date at exactly 2:03 pm.

‘Winter begins according to the climatic concept with the beginning of December, when the average temperatures in the northern hemisphere get cold,” Al-Jarwan said.

During this period, residents can expect longer nights and shorter days as well as many cosmic phenomena.
Meteor showers, he said, will be a special scene around January 4 as “strong ‘wailing’ showers of up to 120 meteors per hour” will appear in the sky.

“In general, the average temperature at the beginning of the winter season is 12 degrees at the minimum and 25 degrees in the maximum in the Arabian Peninsula,” Al-Jarwan added.

The UAE residents are particularly loving the unique kind of winter in the country as temperature does not sting the skin, with the sea in the daytime remaining warm enough to take a dip.

It’s this distinct feature that His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, unveiled the ‘World’s Coolest Winter’ campaign to give a boost in the tourism industry amid the blow of the global pandemic.

The 45-day campaign invites the public to explore the major destinations and hidden gems of the seven emirates.
