China fires water cannon vs. PH vessels in Scarborough Shoal

The China Coast Guard vessels have fired water cannons to Philippine vessels conducting maritime patrols and resupply missions in Scarborough Shoal on April 30, 2024.

“The primary objective of this mission was to distribute fuel and food supplies, highlighting our commitment to supporting the fishermen in accordance with the President’s food security policy,” said PCG Spokesperson for West PH Sea Jay Tarriela in a statement.

During the patrol, the Philippine vessels encountered dangerous maneuvers and obstructions from four China Coast Guard vessels and six Chinese Maritime Militia vessels.

The China Coast Guard vessel’s water cannons targeted the PCG vessel from both sides, resulting in damage to the railing and canopy.

“This damage serves as evidence of the forceful water pressure used by the China Coast Guard in their harassment of the Philippine vessels,” said Tarriela.

The PCG also noted that the Chinese Coast Guard has once again installed a 380-meter floating barrier that covers the entire entrance of the shoal “effectively restricting access to the area”.

Tarriela said that the harassment and provocative actions of the Chinese Coast Guard, both the PCG and BFAR vessels stood their ground and continued their maritime patrol.

“They were not deterred and will persist in carrying out their legitimate operations to support Filipino fishermen and ensure their safety,” he added.
