Baku is the capital and commercial hub of Azerbaijan. It is widely known for its Old City with its medieval walls, as well as its contemporary landmarks including the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, Heydar Aliyev Center, and the Flame Towers – famous for its trio of pointed skyscrapers that’s completely covered with LED screens.
Baku has recently been in the spotlight of worldwide events including the European games and the Grand Prix. Also known as “The City of Winds”, the travelers who have visited the Baku notes its windy climate that stretches throughout the year.
Here are Azerbaijan’s sites you shouldn’t miss:
From Waste to Art Museum. From its name alone, you can figure out that Baku has managed to unearth and/or create beautiful art pieces out of what could have been waste. Created on the territory of the Qala State History and Ethnography Reserve, the museum is part Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s initiative to help instill to its citizens the mindset of keeping the environment clean and thinking of ways to reuse different materials.
Fire Temple. Also known as the Ateshgah of Baku, the place was once used as a place of worship for Hindus, Sikhs, and Zoroastrians. The place is also in close proximity to Yanar Dag, a hillside area rich with natural gas fire at the Absheron Peninsula on the Caspian Sea.
Old City. The Old City is an architectural marvel included as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, where visitors can enjoy viewing Baku’s medieval buildings. They can also get to enjoy Baku’s signature dishes including the Dolma, Piti, and their famous Kebabs.
Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape and Gobustan Mud Volcano. The Gobustan National Park is home to interesting petroglyphs and mud volcanos. In 2007, the cultural landscape got included as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. 300 of the world’s 700 mud volcanoes are located in this part of Azerbaijan near the Caspian Sea.
