Gary Valenciano survives heart surgery, kidney cancer

Veteran singer Gary Valenciano said that he is feeling blessed after his successful battle with two major medical conditions.

It can be recalled that Valenciano went through an open heart surgery on the night of May 6 due to a blocked artery.

According to a report on ABS-CBN, Valenciano suffered from an artery blockage referred to as “The Widow Maker”, and doctors had to crack Valenciano’s chest open, harvest his heart, make it stop beating, and revive it before putting it back in his chest.

Valenciano’s wife, Angeli Pangilinan-Valenciano, was the first one to confirm that the singer’s operation was a success.

After the operation, doctors thought that he will have a hard time recovering. Being a diabetic, his doctors said that his chest wounds might not heal well, but it miraculously did.

However, shortly after his open heart surgery, he began feeling some pain in his lower back.

His doctors initially told him that it was a simple muscular problem, but a six-centimeter tumor attached to his kidney was accidentally discovered after that.

He had to go through another surgery to remove the malignant tumor which the doctors found to be confined and extractable.

They said that there was no metastasis so the doctors just need remove the tumor and slice off part of his kidney, and the singer would be cancer-free, even without chemotherapy or radiation.

In an interview with Korina Sanchez’s weekly lifestyle show, Rated K, Valenciano said, “I came very close to dropping dead in full public view on national television that day. I’m told that one more jump could’ve done that job. I was miraculously saved from that.”

“Doctors were again baffled I was healing so well after my open heart surgery, despite my diabetes. They say I have the heart of a strong 25-year-old… And when they saw the tumor in my kidney and were able to take it all out without any need for chemo? Well, we all agree: this is the work of the Lord, and nothing else. I am blessed,” he added.
