Overseas Filipina worker (OFW) killed in Kuwait was laid to rest Saturday in her hometown in Sara, Iloilo.
A mass was held at St. John the Baptist Church before OFW Joanna Demafelis was buried at Virgin Island Cemetery around 4 in the afternoon.
Family and friends of Demafelis wore white shirts with a printed photo of the slain OFW and words “Justice for Joanna Demafelis” to continue their call for justice for the death of the Filipina.
Demafelis’ family extended their gratitude for the support toward the OFW. They have also been receiving financial assistance from both the government and private individuals.
“Para sa akin, sapat na ang tulong para sa amin. Maraming salamat sa lahat,” Crisanto Demafelis, father of the slain Filipina, said.
The bruised and tortured body of Demafelis was discovered stuffed inside a freezer at an abandoned apartment in Kuwait. Authorities confirmed her death February 9.
“‘Yung kabila ng mukha…’saka ‘yung kamay niya. Durog-durong na ba ‘yung buto. ‘Saka yung bewang, ‘saka yung ribs parang durog na,” her father Crisanto said when he saw Joanna’s body on February 19.
Demafelis’ employers, Nader Essam Assaf and wife Mona Hassoun, are currently in the custody of Lebanon and Syria respectively.
The couple will face death by hanging if proven guilty.
Meanwhile, Philippine officials are set to meet with Kuwaiti authorities to talk about providing better protection for OFWs amid imposed deployment ban to the Gulf State.
