The Department of Labor and Employment’s rollout of the new identification card for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) has received backing from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)’s migrants and itinerant arm.
Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos, chairman of the CBCP’s Episcopal Commission on Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI), endorsed the iDOLE to OFWs and lauded the government’s efforts to scrap the Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC).
“[CBCP ECMI] recommends it to our OFWs to avail it,” Santos said in a statement. “It is beneficial and would lessen the burden of our OFWs of long lines, travel time and bureaucracy in securing OECs.”
DOLE is set to launch the ID on July 12. This identification card could be used to process transactions with the Social Security System, Pag-IBIG Fund, and Philippine Health Insurance Corporation.
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the government is also looking to turn the iDOLE into passports.
