DICT eyes limiting social media access to unregistered sim users

The Department of Information and Communications Technology or DICT is studying the possibility of limiting the social media access of sim card users who are yet to register their sims.

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy said that this move will serve as consequence for those who refuse to register their sim even after the 90-day extension.

“In the last two weeks, we were averaging a million SIM registration a day. That goes to show that the issue is not really limited ID or anything. It’s just bad habit of delaying to the last minute the compliance to the law,” Uy said.

Uy said they are now looking at limiting access to social media accounts or cellular services.

“We’re still deciding on the date, but let’s say after 60 days, you will lose your access to your Facebook accounts or your TikTok accounts, but you can still call and text. Then after a certain period, you will lose outgoing calls. That way ramdam niyo kung anong effect ‘pag hindi kayo nagparehistro,” Uy said.

“We feel na kapag makatikim sila gradually kung anong effect ng hindi magparegister, eh mapipilitan sila magparehistro,” the DICT chief added.
