A new mutation of COVID-19 called “Deltacron” has been discovered in Cyprus.
The strain is reported to be a combination of the Delta and Omicron variants.
It has a similar genetic background to the Delta variant, as well as some of the mutations from Omicron.
According to Leondios Kostrikis, Professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus and Head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology, “There are currently Omicron and Delta co-infections, and we found this strain that is a combination of these two.”
However, he said that it is not something to be worried about at the moment.
He added: “We will see in the future if this strain is more pathological or more contagious or if it will prevail” over Delta and Omicron.
Kostrikis believes that the strain will also be displaced by the highly contagious Omicron variant.
